Despite winning Best Actress at the 81st Oscars Awards, Kate Winslet's performance in this film is at best okay. I also did not find old Hanna Schmitz's make up believable.
On the other hand, David Kross deserves more recognition for his portrayal of young Michael Berg. Let it be clear, The Reader is a coming-of-age film about Michael Berg set in post World War II Germany. Kate Winslet, despite winning an award for Best Actress for her role, played a supporting character in this story about Michael Berg. The Reader is not a film about Hanna, the illiterate Nazi guard, or about World War II.
