As a fantasy film, The Lord of the Rings isn't as pretty as the Harry Potter series. In the genre of epic journey, its story pale in comparison to Journey to the West. I appreciate J. R. R. Tolkien's writing more than the films themselves. I don't think I would rank the films as high on the list if I didn't know that they were based on an important piece of literature. J. R. R. Tolkien's genius shines through the films' plot and many of the films' scenes and dialogues. In other words, the filmmakers did a good job maintaining the integrity of the original literature. All in all, if I were to judge the films by themselves without accounting for the films' origin, I would say they are just alright. Maybe I would feel differently about the films if I had watched them when they were first released. Special effects are so common nowadays. They are not appreciated like they used to.
