If I was a high school history or English teacher, I would require my students to read All Quiet on the Western Front. Then I would show this movie to my class. Films that are based on important literary work, like this film, well known fables, or true life events mean more, for lack of better words. I tend to rank those films higher on this movie list.
Edward Berger deserves an Oscar nomination for Best Director for this film at the upcoming Oscars. In addition to a Best Director nod, I predict that All Quiet on the Western Front will also receive nominations for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best International Feature Film, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing.
Today is 3/18/2023. The 95th Oscars was last Sunday. All Quiet on the Western Front was nominated for nine awards at last Sunday's Oscars, winning four of the nine awards. Best Director was not one of the nine nominations, contrary to my prediction. While winning four Oscars isn't bad, the film found greater success at the British Academy Film Awards earlier this year, receiving 14 nominations and winning seven of the 14 awards it was nominated for, including Best Picture and Best Director.
