The film wasn't what I expected. It was a lot better and easier to watch than I anticipated. Dunkirk isn't your typical war film. The film is set in a war. The war, however, is a mere backdrop. Dunkirk is a survival film. Survival is the recurring theme throughout the film.
Christopher Nolan did many things right with this film. What he didn't do right is casting Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy. I dislike these two actors. Their roles are small. Thank God. Tom Hardy's role involves him sitting in a plane with his face half covered. You can barely tell it's him. Still, scenes with him and Cillian Murphy were the toughest to enjoy. To be fair, neither actor did a poor job in this film. My dislike towards the two actors roots in their performances in other films. When I saw them in this film, I was like, not these two again.
Mark Rylance's performance was the strongest among the ensemble cast. Fionn Whitehead held his own as the leading man.
