The film wasn't what I expected. It was a lot better and easier to watch than I anticipated. I'd say Dunkirk isn't your typical war film. The film is set in a war. The war, however, is a mere backdrop. Dunkirk is a survival film. Survival is recurring theme throughout the film.
Christopher Nolan did many things right with this film. What he didn't do right is casting Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy. I dislike these two actors. Both Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy had small roles in this film. Tom Hardy's role involves him sitting in a plane with his face half covered. You can barely tell it's him. Still, scenes with him and Cillian Murphy were the toughest to enjoy. To be fair, neither actor did a poor job in this film. Their roles are small, they'd have to try to screw up. My dislike toward the two actors roots in their performances in other films. When I saw them in this film, I was like, not these two again.
Mark Rylance's performance was the strongest among the ensemble cast. Fionn Whitehead held his own as the leading man.
