There are two short stories with the same name, Barn Burning. There is Barn Burning, written by Japanese author, Haruki Murakami. And there is Barn Burning, written by American author William Faulkner. The bulk of the movie, Burning, is based on Haruki Murakami's Barn Burning. The subplot of the movie, relating to Jong-su's relationship with his Dad, includes elements from William Faulkner's Barn Burning.
The film is too poetic and not enough crazy. I wanted more thriller film elements. More suspense. But a lot of that is left to the imagination. After reading a synopsis of Murakami's Barn Burning, I understand why the film is the way it is. The writer of Burning did a really good job adhering the source material.
